Will Artificial Intelligence Eat or Create Jobs?????

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is viewed as the new monster in the job arena. AI is speculated to eat up most of the manual and repetitive jobs, throwing off several professionals out of their jobs. In view of the job devouring spree to get unleashed once the AI monster is released from the cage, there has been resentment growing among the professionals in the prospect of losing their jobs.

The resentment reaction is nothing new or is specific to AI, and in fact, such resentment or protest preludes implementation of all new technologies.

Take the case of the preceding days of implementation of computers in Indian workplaces. The idea of using computers in workplaces was vehemently opposed as it was regarded that the number of jobs will shrink as only one computer was sufficient to do most of the official work.

But, what had happened eventually? Computers were implemented in workplaces and efficiency in the work got multiplied manifold. Again, what about the job lessening fear? It had vanished as new jobs were created on the contrary.

This is the typical welcome for any new technology before it firmly establishes its usefulness and value to the society.

Why are newer technologies developed after all? Developing newer technologies is no child's play but involves years of hard work and huge investments. Is that done with the intent of negatively impacting the society, while benefiting only a small cross-section of the society? This is a question worth pondering deeply as it also indirectly answers the future role of AI in the industry ecosystem.

Akin to all technologies, AI also is being created to: impact positively to the society, bring in more efficiency in the workplace and open up new and broader areas of work.

A global think-tank has said that by 2020, AI will eliminate 1.8 million jobs worldwide; while creating 2.3 million-- that means AI will actually create 0.5 million more jobs.

So, why worry?
